Insights on How to Survive and Thrive at "Society and Career"
We were honoured to welcome Mr. Yoshiaki Okabe, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of , as a guest speaker during the last session of “Society and Career.”
Tokio Marine Group is one of the largest and most respected insurance companies globally. Founded in 1879, the company has built a long-standing reputation for reliability and trust. From its origins in Japan, Tokio Marine has expanded its operations worldwide, now present in 46 countries, including Malaysia. In Malaysia, the company offers both general and life insurance services.
During the session, Mr. Okabe posed a thought-provoking question:
“How many companies in the world have survived for more than 200 years?”
Of the approximately 5,500 companies worldwide, Japan boasts the highest number, with over 3,000 companies having reached this milestone.
Tokio Marine’s success has been driven by its ability to balance risk-taking with continuous learning. As one of the oldest companies in Japan, Tokio Marine’s long history reflects its resilience and adaptability.
Mr. Okabe also shared valuable insight, comparing the company’s approach to the “first penguin” theory—taking calculated risks to lead the market and ensure long-term survival.
In closing, Mr. Okabe imparted a powerful message to our students, “Every single person has an important role”. He encouraged them to reflect on their own roles, consider what they can contribute to their teams, and be mindful of the roles others play and the contributions they can make.
We believe that his inspiring words have motivated our students to think critically about how they can thrive in an increasingly complex world.
This was the final session of “Society and Career” for this year.
The session will return next year with our second cohort of students.
